Skin is the largest organ of your body. If eyes are the mirror of the soul, the skin is the mirror of your health and emotional state. In order to have clear, even and radiant skin, you have to detox your body of toxins and your mind of negative thoughts. 

In this article, we’re going to give you tips about ways to clear your body and soul in a holistic way, because that is the only way to get the skin of your dreams. 

The body

  • Skincare: cleansing, gentle products, the way you apply them, exfoliate, clay

The first way to detoxify your skin is to prevent toxins from actually staying on/in your skin. For that, elaborate a routine that matches your skin type (you’ll find help on this page!). 

Double cleansing is a must if you want to rock that Instagrammable skin look. First, massage your skin with natural oil (jojoba, avocado, almond, it’s up to you!) then use your usual cleanser! The oil will capture any dust and impurities due to pollution as well as your excess of sebum!

Then apply clean skincare on your skin, ones that target your specific needs! Plus, you have to be extra gentle when you apply them. Your skin is delicate so take your time and pamper it. 

Exfoliation is another way to remove impurities for your skin. Chemical exfoliation (that’s what offers Moonlight) and mechanical exfoliation are complementary. Do not over-exfoliate though, as it would give your skin a waxy look and wouldn’t be good for your skin overall. Each skin is different so you have to find yourself how much you should exfoliate but don’t forget that less is usually more!

Clay masks can be of great help when it comes to detoxifying your skin! Clays have great detoxifying properties but can be harsh depending on your skin type. Pink clay, for instance, is particularly gentle on sensitive skin and you can mix it with aloe vera gel if you want it to be even more soothing. While doing a clay mask, remember to not let it dry your skin, you have to keep the clay damp. If you let it dry, it will dehydrate your skin and you might experience the opposite effects of what you were originally aiming for. 

  • Food: balanced diet, water, detox food, broth, fasting

Yes, it’s a cliché but you are what you eat! Just as for skincare, before detoxifying, try to prevent toxins. We cannot recommend enough for you to have a balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Water is extremely important as well, infusions can be a great way to drink something other than water! Plus infusions can have interesting detox properties (try hibiscus or liquorice for example!). 

In terms of detox food, here is a non-exhaustive list: artichoke, black radish, lemon, dandelion root, dill, green tea (especially matcha), beet, garlic, etc. 

Now we’re going to share our two favourite ways to detox: detox broth (full of veggies and herbs) and fasting! You can even combine those two, but check with your GP first. Fasting is a methodical thing that you have to plan and organise correctly. Intermittent fasting is another way to fast and is, in our opinion, easier to organise than “regular fasting”.

The detox broth is very easy and simple though, you can even have one once a week!

  • Physical activity: staying active, walking, sport, avoiding the sun, stretching

Your body is made of muscles and is supposed to be active to stay healthy. Try to walk at least 30 minutes every day, that is the bare minimum that you must do to stay in good health! If you’re dynamic, you can obviously do sport! Don’t over-exercise though, and if you’re doing an outdoor activity, wear sunscreen! Sun is one of the worst enemies of the skin. You need 15 minutes of sun per day to get your daily intake of Vitamin D, no more! 

Apart from walking, we recommend you stretch as well! It’s a relaxing way to help your body with blood circulation, which is mandatory when you want to detox! You have to help your body push these toxins out.

  • Take care of your liver/kidneys/colon/lungs/skin/lymphatic system

When you detox, you have to take care of your “detox organs”. The liver, kidneys, colon, lungs, skin and the lymphatic system are your main detox organs, except for the lymphatic system which is a network of tissues and organs. We’re going to share with you a non-exhaustive list of what you could eat or drink to improve your condition depending on the organ you want to help!

Liver –

It cleans and filters your blood, it is a wonderful organ and you this is what we recommend to support it!

  • Eat: Cabbage, beet, garlic, broccoli, salad, turmeric, apples.
  • Drink: Dandelion roots infusion, lemon with hot water.

Kidneys –

They will get rid of your toxins and waste through urine. So you guessed it, the first thing to help them is to drink water! If your urine is dark, you do not drink enough.

  • Eat: Parsley, alfalfa, cilantro, fruits and veggies in general.
  • Drink: Water, infusions, cranberry juice.

Colon – 

Just like kidneys, the colon will get rid of the waste but through the stools. Having a clean and healthy colon is extremely important and will even improve your mood!

Eat Alive fermented food (yoghurt, kefir, pickles, kimchi,…), chia seeds, lentils, onion, turnip.

Drink: Aloe vera juice, dandelion infusion, psyllium (it will balance and cleanse your colon).

Lungs – 

You naturally detox your lungs by breathing, but some foods are known to support lung conditions. Plus you can help your lungs by trying to breathe fresh hair (in a natural environment for instance), you can improve the quality of your hair with air-filtering plants at home and you can even try breathing exercises to relax while cleansing your lungs!

  • Eat: spicy food in general, mustard, pepper, radish, cayenne pepper, turnip.

Skin – 

Skin takes out toxins through sweating. But there are many things that you can do to help it detoxify: sauna, hammam, scrub, dry brushing. 

  • Eat: Beets, blueberries, walnuts, broccoli, kale, bananas.
  • Drink: Water, nettle infusion.

Lymphatic system –

The lymphatic system will remove infections, bacterias, virus, and harmful things from your blood circulation. To promote a healthy, efficient lymphatic, you can massage your body or why not try dry brushing as suggested for the skin! 

  • Eat: Garlic, lemon, ginger, berries, sunflower seeds, seaweed.
  • Drink: Peppermint infusion, ginger root infusion. 
  • Environment tips: pillow, phone, hair products, touching your skin, endocrine disruptors

Many external factors may affect your skin. Here are the most common ones that you have to check out if you feel like your skin may need a detox. 

    • Pillowcase: you spend a lot of time on it and you sweat on it. Remember to change it at least once a week! If not, you may be sleeping on a big colony of bacterias and other charming little things. Yep, that’s gross, so don’t forget to change it! 
    • Phone: do you clean your phone/smartphone every day? Well, if you don’t, do not put your face on it. It’s dirty and a nest for bacterias. 
    • Hair products: when you apply hair products, pay attention to your skin and try to avoid it as much as you can. Hair products are not supposed to be applied to your skin and may damage it. 
    • Touching your skin: you touch it while you’re doing your routine and that’s it. Or at least wash your hands before touching it! You don’t want to spread dirt or bad bacterias on your face, right?
    • Endocrine disruptors: they are chemicals that interfere with your endocrine system. Resulting in many possible issues. They can affect the aspect of your skin. For example, a very common one is bisphenol-A, present in plastic. If you use plastic containers, check that they are bisphenol-A free and avoid warming them as the heat would release endocrine disruptors in the food within the container. Educate yourself about endocrine disruptors, it’s a big subject and we cannot fully cover it here. 

The mind

  • Meditation

A great way to ease and appease your mind is meditation! Even if you’re a beginner, you’ll find that meditation is an amazing way to calm yourself when you’re facing stressful, negative things in your life. What we recommend is to look for guided meditations at first and then you’ll be able to meditate by yourself. 

Skin truly shows your emotions. So when you’re feeling bad, it will most likely show on your skin. Meditation is more than a breathing/focus exercise, it’s a way of life. If you do it correctly, you will automatically tend to rely on it in stressful times. Stressful times might actually even become rarer and rarer! Give it a go 2 or 3 times at least and see for yourself if meditation is working! 

  • Me-time

Enjoy a soothing bath with essential oils, pour yourself a cup of tea, enjoy a facial treatment, watch your favourite movie, write about your goals and accomplishments and so on! Me-time is personal and you have to take that time on a regular basis if you want to keep a fresh, open and loving mind. Everybody deserves to enjoy life so treat yourself and do something just for you, with yourself every once in a while! Lifting your spirit is essential to maintain a healthy glow! And by the way, what’s clear skin without a smile, right?

  • Loving yourself

As a great singer once said, “learning to love yourself, it is the greatest love of all”, does that ring a bell? A peaceful mind is a mind powered by love. But if you want to be able to love anybody, you have got to love yourself first! 

Through our Instagram, we often post positive, empowering affirmations. We post them because we know that having clear skin cannot be managed with skincare only. Skincare can help, a lot, but as we always say, you have to take care of your skin in a holistic way. When you’re looking at yourself in the mirror, the skin is what you see the most. Well, it is the largest organ of the body! If you’re not satisfied yet with your skin, don’t judge yourself. Be nice and gentle to yourself. You are your most precious thing and you are perfect just the way you are. So love yourself (or learn how to!) and you’ll see that your skin (and body) will give it back to you a hundred times.

  • Focus on what you love

Skin is kind of like an eternal work in progress. Once you’ve reached your goals, you’ve got to maintain it. But for some of us, rfeaching our skin goals seems like an impossible thing to do. Well, a reason that might be happening is that you’re focusing too much on your skin. Having nice skin definitely is important, we get it (we create skincare so we really do get it) BUT it is not the most important thing either. If you find to reach your skin goals and you think you may spend too much time thinking about it then try stopping thinking about it! Do your routine but focus on your hobbies, your passions, your loved ones, your works or your studies. Thinking too much about what you’re not fond of about your skin will only stress you out and will show on your skin. That is a vicious circle that will never stop. So step out of this vicious circle, leave your skin alone for a moment and live your life!
